In fact, less than 50 percent of tests have resulted in the diver floating face-up. This is one of the reasons why buoyancy compensators carry warning labels stating they are not life jackets. Certainly in an emergency we want face-up floating, but the design characteristics that decrease drag and improve comfort and underwater stability work against this. Face-up floating is affected more by the location of the weight system and the buoyancy of the tank than the BC. Most divers could achieve face-up floating by moving weight to the rear, adding trim weights, or using negatively buoyant tanks, but doing so can make it difficult to maintain stability in the normal underwater swimming position and create a tendency to turn upside down under water.

In general, BCs with buoyancy located toward the back will have a greater face-down tendency, though some integrated weight systems counteract or reduce this tendency. A few models make it difficult to move to a face-up position on the surface, but most are stable once the diver is in this position. It’s nearly impossible to predict the surface floating position of a particular BC without trying it in the water yourself.

The witches tour continues, well that is what my husband calls it anyway. I just got The Wizard of Oz matinee tickets for my sisters and my mum, so we are all going to London for the day to do some shopping and watch the show.

The jokes are flowing around here, where will we park our brooms and which one is the wicked witch. I think I will let him just carry on with them now so they are out of his system when my mum gets here. I don’t think he has worked out yet that if I am gone for the day that means he is in charge of the kids for the day.
